High Trails Outdoor Education Center
 Assistant Director Job Posting

Reports to: HTOEC Program Director

To further the mission of HTOEC through providing outdoor education for elementary and middle school students. The director of High Trails Outdoor Education Center is the top leadership position for HTOEC and the High Trails facility in spring and fall. The director is a year-round, professional and managerial position. The  director’s overarching responsibility is to oversee the HTOEC program.

Position Purpose/Major Function of the Position:

To further the mission of HTOEC through providing outdoor education for elementary and middle school students. The assistant director of High Trails Outdoor Education Center is a leadership position for HTOEC and the High Trails facility in the spring and fall seasons. The assistant director is a year-round, professional and managerial position. 

Essential Job Functions:

1. Oversee and manage the high school leadership program. Recruit, enroll, and onboard new school partners for the high school leadership program.

2. Assist in hiring seasonal instructors. Interview candidates.

3. Cultivate relationships within HTOEC community, especially with coordinators and administrators.

4. Update Discovery Group curriculums.

5. Risk management of HTOEC program and crisis oversight.

7. Assist in designing of staff training as well as lead and participate in staff training.  

8. Oversight of all daily operations (kitchen, maintenance, and laundry).

9. Communicate with support services for all operational needs.

10. Onboard and support high school coordinators.

11. Assist in the scheduling of staff and supervise the designated High School staff member.

12. Assist in the scheduling of schools into fall and spring seasons.

13. Organize (and often instruct) off season school visits

14. Respond to school interest outside HTOEC program (i.e. RMSEL, Renaissance School, Ute Pass)

15. Maintain and care for HTOEC learning centers (i.e. Quicks Homestead, Interbran & Ute tipi Village)

16. Order and update paper materials and holiday mailings

17. Assist in maintaining and updating the HTOEC website

18. Assist in HTOEC marketing.
COEC Cross Organizational Support:
  • Participate in TNP and SWC programs or trainings as needed. Including things like facilitation and leading sessions.
  • Help organize and participate in COEC wide work projects including share space cleanings and shoveling snow
  • Support other COEC programs ie alumni reunions, as instructed by the Director and Executive Director.

Supervisory Responsibilities and other Relationships:
  • The HTOEC Assistant Director will provide feedback to seasonal instructors. 
  • The HTOEC Assistant Director is part of the year round COEC leadership team. 

Qualifications:  (Minimum Qualifications, Education and Experience)
  • Teaching experience within the HTOEC program or elsewhere in an outdoor education program or classroom setting.
  • Strong relationship-building experience.
  • A college degree or equivalent experience in education.
  • Comfort teaching in the outdoors and general familiarity of the outdoors. 

Additional Beneficial Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Self-motivated, autonomous independent work ethic, organized
  • Ability and desire to manage and lead people in a compassionate way that makes them feel valued, supported, and respected.
  • Strong organizational skills to apply to the logistics of coordinating staff, schools, facilities, nurses, kitchen, etc.
  • Experience mentoring staff in naturalist knowledge, teaching, group management, lesson planning, High Trails specific knowledge (programmatic and geographic)

Physical Requirements of the Position:
  • Must be able to be on their feet all day for extended work weeks.
  • Must be able to hike moderate distances (up to 4 mi) over uneven terrain. 
  • Must be willing to work long days and flexible hours
  • Must be live onsite while in season. Some remote and some in person during the off season. 


Benefits:
  • Starting salary $2,400/Month
  • Salary Range in Compliance with CDLE Job Postings: $28,800-$30,000 USD/Year
  • Housing/Utilities/Internet provided and food when in season
