Position Purpose/Major Function of the Position:
To further the mission of HTOEC through providing outdoor education for elementary and middle school students. The director of High Trails Outdoor Education Center is the top leadership position for HTOEC and the High Trails facility in spring and fall. The director is a year-round, professional and managerial position. The director’s overarching responsibility is to oversee the HTOEC program.

- Recruit, enroll, onboard new schools and craft the season schedule of returning and new schools.
- Hire instructors, nurses, and leadership team.
- Cultivate relationships within HTOEC community, especially with coordinators, administrators, and districts.
- Hire and support the education and development of the Assistant Director
- Help create the budget including projected revenues, scholarships and expenses.
- Participate in both the Spring and Fall COEC Board Meetings. Provide a written program report and presentation for the fall board meeting.
- Update Discovery Group curriculums
- Risk management of HTOEC program and crisis oversight
- Member of the HTOEC medical team. Also includes Medical Director, Nurses, and other COEC leadership.
- Design and run field staff training each season
- Oversight of all daily operations (kitchen, maintenance, and laundry)
- Track school payments and staff salaries
- Onboard and support school coordinators
- Schedule field staff
- Organize (and often instruct) winter school visits
- Respond to school interest outside HTOEC program (i.e. RMSEL, Renaissance School, Ute Pass)
- Maintain and care for HTOEC learning centers (i.e. Quicks Homestead, Interbran & Ute tipi Village)
- Order and update paper materials and holiday mailings
- Maintain HTOEC website and social media
- Conduct HTOEC marketing.
COEC Cross Organizational Support:
- Participate in TNP and HTOEC programs or trainings as needed. Including things like facilitation and leading sessions.
- Help organize and participate in COEC wide work projects including share space cleanings and shoveling snow
- Support other COEC programs, as instructed by the Executive Director. (for example during an evacuation, The Nature Place program support, or summer support)
Supervisory Responsibilities and other Relationships:
- The HTOEC director is responsible for all HTOEC staff (field staff, nurses, Ed. Development, assistant director).
- The HTOEC director is part of the year round COEC leadership team.
- Approximately 5 years teaching experience, either within the HTOEC program or elsewhere in an outdoor education program or classroom setting.
- Strong relationship-building experience.
- A college degree or equivalent experience in education.
- Experience managing or leading an instructional staff.
- Comfort teaching in the outdoors and general familiarity of the outdoors.
- Curriculum editing experience
- Experience managing an outdoor education program or experience in the High Trails program preferred.
- Self-motivated, autonomous independent work ethic, organized
- Graduate degree in education
- Conversational-Fluent in Spanish
Benefits: - Salary Range: $46,000 - $53,000 Housing & Utilities included: Required to reside at Camp from March-May and End of August-November but year round housing is provided. A hybrid of remote and in person work scheduling is an option in the off season. Meals provided when programs are in season.
