Registered Nurse Qualifications

This job is open to Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners able to practice in the State of Colorado (state or Compact State license). Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis throughout the year due to the seasonality of this position.

We have a local medical director and good relations with doctors in both Woodland Park and Colorado Springs as well as with the local hospital in Woodland Park and with the local EMS services.

Job Responsibilities

  • Be part of the Sanborn Medical Team
  • Provide first aid care and MESH support for campers and staff
  • Oversee the administration of medications to campers and staff
  • Coordinate visits to a physician/ER or assessment by our PA when needed
  • Monitor health and cleanliness standards in the health center
  • Organize paper work and maintain online digital documentation plus filing
  • Communicate and work closely with the summer camp directors and various staff as part of the Sanborn Medical Team
  • Oversee the health and wellness of campers and staff
  • Maintain clear, helpful and professional communications with parents and directors
  • Assist staff with activities, work projects, driving trips and other tasks as necessary

Primary Essential Functions

  • Must have visual and auditory ability to assess any unsafe environment or hazard and physical ability to respond appropriately to any situation.
  • Must have physical ability and strength to lead activities five days a week, including carrying a 40 lbs pack over varied terrain (snow, tundra, boulders, loose rock, etc.).
  • Most days are fully packed for 7-12 hours and there is limited recovery time due to additional in-unit responsibilities.
  • Be physically fit for an active camp environment, adapt to high elevation living, and be able to work long hours when needed.
  • Abilities to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
  • Must be comfortable sleeping outdoors and managing personal hygiene without toilets or running water.
  • Must be able to live in a cabin with others (campers and/or staff), and eat meals in a large, noisy dining room.

What’s a Typical Day Like?

There is no such thing as a typical day at Sanborn. Our month-long and two-week long camp sessions are growth-focused and progressive, with much of the individual and community growth occurring on the All-Day, Overnight or Multi-day trips we offer. All staff members are trip leaders and are part of shared leadership teams. This allows our staff members to try out a wide variety of outdoor activities and share their strengths in different areas of the program throughout your time at camp.

8:45 - 9:30 Cabin Clean-Up (everyone participates, staff included)

9:30 Assigned trips depart

9:30 - 12:00 Morning Program (2.5 hours)

12:00 - 12:30 Cabin Time

12:30 Lunch

1:30 - 2:30 Rest Hour

2:30 - 5:00 Afternoon Program

5:00 Assigned trips return

5:00 - 6:00 Cabin Time

6:00 Dinner

7:15/7:30 Evening Program (whole camp, cabin sides)

8:30 Cabin Time

Weekends

Friday Evenings

Themed Dinners, All High Trails or All Big Spring Camp Activity, Coed Activities for Older Campers

Saturday Specials (some are coed), All Camp Activities (Hike the Pike, Gymkhana), and Dance
